Inspired by Fireflies

I started to blog only last year (2011), having been compelled to write about various things that interest me, inspire me, are important to me, or that I have experienced in some time or other that I wish to share.  There's something about writing that is liberating, illuminating, which has inspired me to create this blog.

I chose the firefly as the inspiration behind it. A firefly symbolizes many things--light, illumination, awakening and the like. An ordinary creature during the day, the firefly becomes a remarkable sight at night, when it is given the chance to glow to its full splendor.

The firefly has many similarities with humans. Our physical appearance may seem given, but what is inside us makes us shine from the inside out, and that we shine brighter when seemingly everything around us seem dreary, dark, and discouraging.

At some point in our life, we are inspired by light and we want to be a light. But often we are timid and do not take the chance. Not because we are lazy. Maybe because we are apprehensive. Often it's fear of the unknown, of things yet to come. We fear something, we hesitate. Often the fears are mainly because we refuse to acknowledge our role in this world or our importance in the eyes of God who created us.

I found a passage from Marianne Williamson that I picked up from the net. This passage so striking has made me stop and think about why, often I can be timid, lacked courage, be constantly insecure and often fearful--all of which have very too often prevented me from accomplishing what I have set out to do or achieving my dreams.

'Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate.
Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous?
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn't serve the world.
There's nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won't feel insecure around you.
We are all meant to shine, as children do.
We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.
We are born to make manifest the glory..that is within us
It's not just in some of us, it's in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people
permission to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.' ~Marianne Williamson

The passage allegorically refers to us as a light source. That's why I chose this passage and the symbol of the firefly to make a point.

If I could be a firefly even for a minute, then perhaps I would have fulfilled the roles I'm given each day, step up when I should, stand up for what's right, speak up and speak out when I have to. There's certainly no reason for fear if we know what we do is to fulfill God's plan for us and for God's greater glory.

Fireflies indeed could teach a lesson or two about--inspiration, illumination, awakening, hope, aspiration, guidance, creativity, achievement. Fireflies never hide their light and we certainly should  not hide ours.
